ON-LINE EVENT!

Urban Change, Uncertainty and the Young Generation

The Challenge Explained

Tanzania is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in East Africa and home to a young population. Over 50% of Tanzanians are between 15 and 55 years old. When it comes to the space and the economy, most transformation in Tanzania happens in informal ways and spaces. About 70% percent of urban neighborhoods are built in land that is not surveyed and more than 80% of new jobs are not officially registered.

The main questions this Pecha Kucha asks are: how does the young generation in Tanzania, those between 15 and 35 years old, navigate these fast changing urban and working environments? What specific challenges and opportunities do they see for the present moment and for the future? How do sudden changes in their daily living, and uncertainties such as the current global corona virus pandemic, affect their views, and also their plans and aspirations?

Pecha Kucha

Pecha Kucha (Japanese for “chit chat”) is a storytelling platform used widely around the world. Through short presentations of 20 slides, and a 20-second time limit for each slide, Pecha Kucha participants can discuss their interests, passion and knowledge to a group of open and receptive individuals, in less than seven minutes. Scroll down to learn more about how to prepare a Pecha Kucha presentation.

We want to listen to the young generation in Tanzania on how they feel and deal with fast urban change and uncertainty. Examples of specific issues include but are not limited to the coronavirus pandemic, food accessibility, adequate shelter, cost of living, education and job opportunities and security, climate change, flooding, etc. This event will be an on-line event.

Specific Goals

The Pecha Kucha fits within the overall goal of the CityLab, which is to be a safe space for discussing different aspects of urban production and transformation in Dar es Salaam, and to reimagine paths that can lead to more sustainable urban futures.

Specific goals of this Pecha Kucha include:

●       engaging the young generation in Dar es Salaam and around the world to an interactive and innovative platform for debate, with a broad audience;

●       talk about urban transformation and uncertainty as it affects this young generation;

●       connecting young populations from different backgrounds and geographical locations;

●       Sharing on the ground experiences about how the different groups and communities from the young generation are coping with global uncertainties.

How to Prepare a Pecha Kucha Presentation?

You have to create 20 slides on your topic of choice and each slide will run for 20 seconds. The whole presentation comes to about 6 minutes 40 seconds in total: clear and concise.

The presentation does not have to be in PowerPoint format (though it is preferred); you can send us JPEG images numbered in order from 1-20 if you would like. The reason for this is so we can gather all presentations together and put them into one continuous slide show. Please DO NOT send via PDF.

This year it is easier to create your Pecha Kucha presentation and practice with the PK Create channel. I will need your full name and preferred e-mail address to sign you onto the system. As a Presenter, you can:

Select and upload 20 images

Record, Rehearse, and Playback

Download as a presentation deck (without audio)

Download as a video file to share!

Your presentations will be uploaded onto a similar system after the main event so your presentation becomes part of the global reach. This way you can practice making it perfect!

If in PowerPoint format do not put timers on the slides. We will time the slides for you. Also, avoid using animations as they interfere with the timing of slides.

It is best not to use text in these presentations. Key Words and Images work best.

Presentations should be done and sent to me by dd/mm
